20年ごのわたし

20年ごのわたしはコロンビア大学ととうきょのけいざいの学のきょうじゅうです。月曜日から木曜日までけいざいのクラスを大学生におしえます。あきがっきにとうきょうにいますが、はるがっきにニューヨークにいます。私のつまは日本から来ましたから、あきに日本にいます。とうきょうはニューヨークよりたのしいですが、せかいでニューヨークが一ばんすきです。そして、時々ブラジルへいきます。私のちちとははは私のむすめがだいすきですから、毎年のふゆブラジルへかえります。

げつしょうびからもくようびまでごご１じから５じまでクラスへいきます。それから、ジムへいきます。７じから１０じまでひとりでとしょかんでべんきょします。しゅくだいほします。それから、いつもごご１０じにばんごはんおたべます。ときどきごぜん１じにねます。いつも、１２じにねます。

Senior Year Shenanigans: Studying Japanese

I grew up surrounded by Japanese culture. My home town, Sao Paulo, Brazil, had the largest Japanese population outside of Japan in the whole world. Hearing my friends' Japanese surnames, watching Anime, eating Donburi for dinner, and so on, were as much of a routine for me as watching cartoons and eating burgers for the standard American kid. I've studied Japanese History on my own, read on Japanese Politics and Economics during High School and College, yet I couldn't speak the language of a country I grew extremely fond of.

Senior Year, however, is a wonderful time in which you bestow upon yourself the right to pursue whatever activity you want, excusing yourself by the fact it might be your last opportunity to do that particular activity. And so I decided to enroll in one of the most time-consuming classes in the whole University: First-Year Japanese I.

So far, there is one undeniable conclusion: I regret profoundly not start taking Japanese from my first semester at Columbia. The department is outstanding, おかもとせんせい is the most dedicated Professor I've had during my time at Columbia so far, and the fast learning curve makes me excited to go to class (and spend an above-average time outside of class) and to learn Japanese. So, a bit of よねんせい knowledge: take a language/culture class you are passionate about. Chances are you will end up regretting if you don't. あのう、there is always time to make up for past mistakes.
